Compounding atmospheric scattering and wildfire smoke particulate interference demonstrate significant optical distortions, underscoring critical calibration and atmospheric compensation challenges for military electro-optical sensors, intelligence assets, and space domain awareness constellations.

NASA data maps the August 2026 total solar eclipse across Arctic Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. The path intersects key operational corridors, driving critical defense focus on ionospheric signal disruption, satellite sensor calibration, and space domain awareness.

NASA’s PREFIRE CubeSat mission has captured two complete years of polar thermal measurements, mapping far-infrared emissions that account for nearly 60 percent of Earth's space-bound heat loss. The data directly improves predictive weather models vital for Arctic defense and maritime logistics.

NASA and NOAA have unveiled their Hyperwall schedule for IGARSS 2026, showcasing strategic investments in real-time multisensor platforms, Earth observation data integration, and critical mineral mapping. These advancements carry direct operational implications for defense spatial awareness, critical infrastructure resilience, and resource security.

Escalating wildfires across Washington state have destroyed hundreds of structures, forced National Guard deployment, and triggered the activation of NASA's Disasters Program. Advanced satellite remote sensing and interagency data sharing are now driving tactical response and critical infrastructure defense.
