Space Forces Central Targets Fivefold Growth for CENTCOM Missions
U.S. Space Forces Central plans a fivefold expansion over the next three years to meet surging demand for space capabilities across CENTCOM operations. The force growth aims to address critical staffing shortfalls in joint targeting, intelligence, and electronic warfare execution.
U.S. Space Forces Central (SPACECENT) is preparing for a fivefold personnel expansion over the next three years to support surging operational demands across the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility. Activated in December 2022, the component currently operates with a lean footprint of approximately 30 personnel split between Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, and Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. According to SPACECENT Commander Brig. Gen. Todd Benson, scaling headquarters staff is essential to establish a combat-credible service component capable of sustaining full-spectrum operational planning, intelligence fusion, and front-line execution.
Operational demands driven by conflict in the Middle East, particularly active contingency operations involving Iran, have exposed severe capacity limits within the small command element. SPACECENT personnel deployed downrange are tasked with delivering continuous space effects—including electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). A primary priority for the upcoming expansion is expanding SPACECENT’s specialized intelligence unit. Benson noted that during joint force targeting cycles involving over 1,000 personnel, SPACECENT at times had only two Guardian representatives—a shortfall that hinders full integration of space effects into target selection and prioritization.
The mandate for growth reflects a broader institutional evolution within the Department of the Air Force and the Department of Defense. The Space Force has rapidly established components across every geographic combatant command, most recently activating U.S. Space Forces Special Operations. However, maintaining continuous 24/7 operations in high-tempo operational theaters while concurrently building long-term headquarters capacity poses a sustained operational challenge. As space becomes permanently integrated into every joint military operation, the service must balance force presentation with the physical sustainment of its Guardians downrange.
For defense, government, and industry leaders, SPACECENT’s fivefold growth trajectory highlights urgent operational requirements for both personnel and material capabilities. The component requires expanded terrestrial hardware—such as tactical electronic warfare jammers—and enhanced orbital assets to maintain local space superiority. Industry partners offering rapid procurement pathways for ground-based space control hardware, integrated intelligence processing tools, and resilient command-and-control infrastructure will be critical to supporting SPACECENT’s shift toward a steady-state combat component.
