NASA Repurposes USAF Boeing 737 as Dual-Use Space and Autonomy Testbed
NASA has unveiled a modified Boeing 737, acquired from the U.S. Air Force, configured for Artemis lunar crew suit validation and airborne testing of autonomous control and sensor systems.
NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center has unveiled a newly repainted Boeing 737, marking a major milestone in the platform’s transition from United States Air Force inventory into a multi-mission civil research aircraft. Formally acquired by NASA in June, the twinjet is undergoing strategic structural and technical modifications in Oklahoma to serve as a versatile reduced-gravity and systems-integration flight platform. Jointly managed by NASA Armstrong at Edwards Air Force Base and NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the aircraft will support both human spaceflight qualification and advanced aeronautics research.
The primary short-term operational mission for the modified 737 is conducting parabolic lunar-gravity test flights. These tailored flight profiles create sustained reduced-gravity conditions essential for validating next-generation astronaut lunar suits, life-support hardware, and crew interface systems required for the Artemis program. By establishing a high-fidelity terrestrial environment for human-in-the-loop testing, the program mitigates operational risk and accelerates technical readiness levels for hardware destined for the lunar surface, directly supporting NASA's schedule commitments.
