The newly onboarded civil service cohort addresses expanding mission complexity across high-consequence domains, including artificial intelligence safety, vision-based navigation, and mission-critical defect remediation. A primary example of this technical pipeline is Stanford-educated computer engineer Fletcher Newell, recipient of the 2025 IV&V Engineer of the Year award. Newell’s work demonstrates the operational impact of the facility, having identified more than 70 high-impact software vulnerabilities across major human exploration and power programs, including the Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom surface power initiative, Orion, Gateway, and the Human Landing System (HLS).
