Federal Chief Information Officer and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Greg Barbaccia is set to return to defense technology contractor Palantir Technologies following his departure from government on August 31. The move was publicly revealed by General Services Administration Administrator Edward Forst during a U.S. Digital Corps event. Barbaccia joined the Office of Management and Budget in January 2025 after spending a decade at Palantir, followed by senior leadership roles at Elementus and Theorem. His background also includes significant operational military service as a U.S. Army intelligence sergeant and analyst within the intelligence community.
During his tenure directing federal IT and artificial intelligence policy at OMB, Barbaccia spearheaded major enterprise technology initiatives designed to streamline federal software acquisition and governance. As Federal CIO and CAIO, he pushed executive agencies to modernize technology procurement, demanded stricter enforcement of the 2014 Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA) to empower agency CIOs over capital allocation, and established central OMB mechanisms to track major IT decisions. He also championed agency-level AI adoption and spearheaded the U.S. Tech Force program, aimed at building technical capability across federal ranks.
