Air Force Prepares Collaborative Combat Aircraft for First Large-Scale Exercise

The U.S. Air Force’s Experimental Operations Unit will integrate Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) into a major operational push during the Emerald Flag exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in December. For defense leaders and industrial partners, the primary risk point has shifted from hardware performance to software maturation and policy integration. Mission autonomy serves as the critical enabler for operational effectiveness, requiring rapid, iterative software updates driven directly by operator feedback during field exercises. Furthermore, fully deploying autonomous formations will require the Air Force to rewrite legacy doctrine and coordinate with the Federal Aviation Administration to establish updated airspace policies for uncrewed aircraft operations within national airspace.

As live-fire testing progresses—following Anduril’s successful AIM-120 air-to-air missile release in July and upcoming tests by General Atomics—the CCA program is setting the template for future autonomous acquisition.
